Off of James Island, just Southeast of the town of Sidney, BC, we were fortunate enough to have a small family of Transient Orcas passing through. Transient Killer Whales differ from Residents in that they eat a variety of foods, from dolphins, whales, seals, deer, moose, and sometimes even birds. The Residents strictly eat salmon. When you're hanging out with Transients, sometimes you just get to watch them travel slowly and methodically (sleep), but sometimes you get to see them when they're chowing down. I've seen Transients toss sea lions in the air, chase dolphins, and chase sea birds. This time, I happened to have my camera ready when this young male literally launched a Pigeon Guillemot into the air. Pretty lucky! Me, and the Guillemot, who got away,
